Grant Olson: The Space Trilogy 1

Space Trilogy Discussion

Rain is a distinct factor of Earth because no other planet has been discovered with it (by humans), especially when the water falls from the sky.  In the beginning of the first book, Out of the Silent Planet, C.S. Lewis starts off with Ransom being caught in a thunderstorm, which ends with Ransom sobbing because he encounters rain again.  This relates to the Narrative Paradigm because both of these times the rain was just rain, but the situation warranted a different response from Ransom.  The first reaction to the rain was Ransom hiding under a tree, waiting for the rain to pass and he wasn’t really happy with it because it was an inconvenience.  The second encounter was when he returned to Earth and felt the rain again, realizing he was finally back on his home planet and familiar with this land.  This “storytelling” in a sense gives a new meaning to the symbolic rain on Earth for Ransom and the reader.  However, the issue with this is some people believe the Rational World Paradigm where humans are rational beings instead of storytelling animals.  This means that Ransom was just happy to be back on Earth regardless of how the book started off with rain or not and ending with rain or not.  The experience of the rain doesn’t matter, but what happened reasonably matters in the Rational World Paradigm.
