Why Does Light Win?

In the Gospel of John chapter 1, the author speaks of Christ as the light of the world. I think this is an important concept to consider, especially with the shortened days and the blistering cold weather on its way for some, and already present for others. How do we understand this season, not only in terms of the weather but also in terms of reflection and solitude? One thing is for certain, we cannot shy away from it. In our age of social media we often try to flee from solitude via our phones or computers (I am doing this right now). But we must confront the darkness, we must confront ourselves, and we must confront the Divine. The incarnation is one of the most powerful moments in history because God stepped out of the light to be in the darkness here with us. So why do we go into the darkness? Because Our Beloved is there!

Visually another thing to consider is how light functions in the darkness. It is more prevalent! When you light a candle in a dark room which captures your attention more, the light or the dark? I will say the light. We don't notice light as much in seasons of light because everything is bright and what's another light? But in a season of darkness, oh we cherish the light. But why is the light more powerful in the darkness? Why does the light win? John 1:5 says because the darkness has not "understood/overcome it." Darkness does not know what to do when light breaks in. Think about it. It can't just overcome, it must flee. Perhaps the reason to confront darkness in this season is to bring light to places that have not understood it. Places that have doubted or questioned the light for years. Places where philosophies and doctrines have been put in place not to explain the light away, but TO RUN FROM IT. These are the places light must go, and we cannot flee in the darkest of hours, for these are the times when light's victories are all the more glorious.
