Of all the C.S. Lewis
books I have read so far, Till We Have
Faces is my favorite. Lewis is a master writer, and this book, as well as
this class, has made me appreciate his writing even more. This novel gives us a
great representation of our inner struggle to fight our selfish human nature
and to battle with the fear of the unknown. Lewis shows us the truth behind our
faith in God. God takes all of our brokenness and allows us to experience joy
through our suffering. He does this, so we can clearly learn who we are. We are
made in the image of God and given a new face. It is only after Orual sees her
twisted perspective and face through the Gods that she is given a new and
beautiful face. She says, "I saw well why the gods do not speak to us
openly, nor let us answer. Till the word can be dug out of us, why should they
hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till
we have faces?" (Lewis 294). There are multiple ways that God speaks to
us, so we must be willing to listen.
