Symbols- Outside Reading

Kenneth Burke's "On Symbols and Society" is a reading I had in my Rhetorical Theory class which relates to the topic of symbols.  Burke talks about how words are symbols we use in a culture to express meaning and in each society, there are different words to describe different things.  We talked about the mystery of language and how it was revealed to Hellen Keller through words (symbols) and objects.  W-A-T-E-R actually came to life when she understood each thing had a name.  She was blind but was given a new sight when learning each hand motion was a symbol for something like water.
