Karl Barth’s “Theological
Declaration of Barmen”
The German Christian church had become corrupted by
Nazi ideals. The church was looking more like a political movement and less
like a religious institution. The declaration is a reminder that the church
belongs to God alone, not to the ruling powers. It became the main confessional
doctrine of the Confessing Church. They decided that proclaiming their beliefs
was important enough to risk their reputations and safety. What do we value
enough to take a bold stance on? There have been few times in my life where my
beliefs have directly been questioned or threatened. How would I respond in
that situation? Until I am directly in that moment I can only speculate. One
would have to truly have faith in their beliefs to risk death and injury for
the sake of arguing their legitimacy. I hope I could be that brave.
