Suffering in Shadowlands

During class we watched “Shadowlands” in which there were many notable lines. At one point, the character playing Lewis says “Does God want us to suffer? What if the answer is yes? ...It is because God loves us that He gives us suffering.” How can this be? Why would you ever make someone suffer if you truly care about them? Lewis said this line in the face of tragedy with a great wisdom about the nature of suffering.
When we were children, we despised our parents for punishing us when we did something wrong. With maturity came an appreciation for discipline because it helped us to learn and grow into better people. There is an ancient Chinese proverb that says “a precious stone must be polished with friction.” In the same way, it is through suffering that people grow and mature. If we are never faced with suffering, how would we ever grow stronger? In fact, God loves us enough to only give us challenges that He knows we can overcome and that ultimately can help us grow, so long as we do not let them destroy us.
