The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines art as “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation” and “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination... also: works so produced.” Throughout this class, I have learned to see myth and stories as a form of art. While I have always displayed a particular interest in art – specifically drawing, painting, and music – I have also held a passion for writing. However, I never considered writing as a form of art until after taking this class.
We have learned that myth is a manifestation of reality and a critique of reality itself. In the same way, art flows from the heart which holds hints of reality within it. This semester, I had to write dozens and dozens of pages between my classes. As the semester went on and I learned more about myth and writing, I came to perceive writing not as a tedious series of assignments, but rather as a way of expressing myself and reality through words. In fact, I began to enjoy writing more because I saw it as a form of art. I only wish that I had gained this perspective earlier in my college career – perhaps I would have enjoyed more of my assignments instead of dreading them!
