Out of the Silent Planet
At the end of the novel, the narrator (Lewis) and Ransom collaborate to create Out of the Silent Planet as a means to stop Weston from doing any more evil. They knew that people would not understand, let alone believe, them if Ransom told the people of Earth the truth of what happened, so he created a “fictional story” to explain it to people. I am relating this to Plato’s cave, because everything in the cave was a mere shadow of what was true and real. The people in the cave did not want to believe the truth, they only believed the shadows, or chose to accept the shadows as their reality. Ransom and the narrator realize that only a few people will see past the guise of the story… just like only a select few people saw past the shadows of the cave and discovered reality outside of the cave.
