Orual’s perspective of her experiences did not give her an accurate perception of reality. She was unable to see where she should have taken responsibility for her own actions because she had already accepted that the gods were responsible. Orual was not open to the version of the narrative that she hears from the priest in Essur. In fact, the story that she hears infuriates her enough to make her write her own story. However, once she presents her complaint before a court and reads her true feelings out loud, Orual understands that she wrongfully placed blame on the gods that should have been placed on herself.
Sometimes we need to take a step back in order to see the whole picture. In class, we discussed the importance of seeing the big picture because our personal perspective, when taken alone, does not offer the entire truth of reality. Instead, we can turn to myth to let us see reality through a different lens. In this way, myth allows us to grasp a deeper understanding of our own reality. Orual rejected the story that she heard in Essur, but it was through hearing that story that she began the process of analyzing her story and ultimately found the truth.
